Is Our School a Good Fit for Your Student?
At The Haven Academy and Canton Homeschool Resources, our small school focuses on hands-on, engaging learning within a positive, respectful, and productive climate. We offer full time and part time options for kindergarten -12th grade.
Students may participate in our full time private school, our fully accredited hybrid school, or enroll in our hybrid homeschool options. We even have a one day option for homeschoolers who want enrichment only.
Fridays are always optional and we aim to meet the flexibility needs of students. We have students who are in the film industry, music industry, travel sports, and those who have medical conditions. We also have students who attend every day without skipping any! We have a wide variety of learners who come to our school but mostly they come for a safe and respectful educational experience.
We serve learners that are on-level, advanced, and those that may have some challenges in the mild range and function well in regular education classrooms. We do not have resource (special education) classrooms, special education paraprofessionals, behavioral therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc. Also, some medical issues are outside of our ability to provide the needed resources.
Students with challenges in the mild range, that we have the resources to serve within our small class sizes, include- some learning disabilities, processing issues, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (Level 1), anxiety, and depression. To promote student success modifications and accommodations can be made such as preferential seating, prompting, extended time on assignments and/or assessments, and reducing and/or chunking assignments. Our Student Support Team assists teachers and parents with instructional plans to support students with challenges.
Some challenges are beyond the scope of our small school's resources. Thus, we are not able to admit students that have moderate to severe challenges such as- impulsivity, behavioral Issues, conduct disorder,
Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Pathological Demand Avoidance, severe ADHD, moderate to pervasive learning disabilities, refusal to complete schoolwork, uncooperative behaviors, inappropriate or disrespectful behaviors, academic performance more than a grade level below their current grade, any history of violent, bullying, disruptive, noncompliant, or impulsive behaviors, previous suspensions/expulsion and/or repeated behavioral referrals.
Students who are advanced and/or working above grade level who do not meet the criteria mentioned above can often be accommodated. We offer honors, AP ( advanced placement courses regulated by College Board for high school students) and Dual Enrollment support for our older students. Younger students are able to be moved around and work may be modified. We examine each student individually with the parents to ensure we are a good fit for all before enrollment.
Before applying, each student's challenges must be disclosed, and all academic and behavioral records must be submitted to a school administrator for our Student Support Team to determine if we can properly meet the student's needs. Failure to disclose information could lead to a student being removed from our programs, but the parents/guardians still having to pay the full contract amount.
If a student has an IEP from a public school or similar document from a private professional or private school, we use this information to assist in determining whether we are a good fit.
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legally binding document required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for children who qualify for special education services in public school. The IEP is a roadmap for the IEP team to help a child progress throughout an academic year. It ensures that special education services are provided as planned and that their appropriateness is regularly evaluated in public schools. While private schools have different procedures for documentation, we do our best to accommodate what we can from the IEP if we feel we can meet the overall needs of the child. . If this document states that students need more than we can offer, it is our moral obligation to suggest alternative placement for the student. This is true even if the parent disagrees with the document information. We have to take the professional assessment and legal paperwork given to us as primary information on the educational needs of the child.
.
It is of the utmost importance to us that all students have the best possible school placement in order to reach their highest potential.
